开学第一课,其实可以这样想/The First Lesson, Thinking in This Way

Event Overview: In late August in 2017, a team of volunteers organized by Chinese Philanthropic Leadership Association from University of Oregon arrived in Fenghuo Middle School in Liquan County in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, China. Energized by the burning sun in late summer, the one-week teaching event began with excitement and anticipation. The title of this teaching event was “First Lesson: Think Differently”. Our teaching focused on concept innovation and aimed to widen the students’ views through creative classroom settings and teaching methods, which were significantly different from the traditional teaching in China. Experience: Our teaching journey, “First Lesson”, began and ended with laughters of the teens and our teaching team in Fenghuo Middle School, and it was fulfilled by anticipation, nervousness, surprise, and excitement. We were reluctant to part from the teens we met by the end of this journey. On our way to Fenghuo Middle School, we were excited, because we could not wait to see the eyes with hopes on the youthful faces. We were upset, because we worried about if the students would enjoy the classes we prepared, understand our purpose and effort we put, and gain useful skills from “First Lesson”. We worried about saying things wrong or would not able to keep the class in charge at the very beginning. Yet, our worries were eliminated in less than ten minutes after we met the teens. From team-building icebreaker activities, in the main courses throughout the week, to the after-class activities, the students are fully involved and engaged. The event went on so smoothly, which was far beyond our expectations. We brought new insights to the teens, and they rewarded us with affirmations and hugs. We felt as happy as the teens were, and we thought that these are the most adorable kids in the world! Joyful time with the teens was fleeting, that the week passed as soon as a blink. We packed our belongings and our cherishable memories in our packages, reluctantly exchanged contact information and farewells with the students. “Dear teachers, we wish you could come back next summer.”
